About the Project: The Maloonga Check Dams Project was undertaken to address the pressing issue of water scarcity in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Recognizing the critical need for sustainable water conservation, the project focused on the construction of seven check dams to recharge groundwater and enhance water availability for both drinking and irrigation.

The initiative aimed to combat water depletion by replenishing bore wells and ensuring a steady water supply for local communities and livestock. The construction of these check dams not only facilitated groundwater recharge but also played a pivotal role in transforming agricultural practices. With improved water availability, farmers were able to expand their cultivation cycles from one to two per year, supporting the growth of cash crops and ensuring sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond agricultural benefits, the project contributed to local employment generation during construction and fostered environmental improvements by increasing vegetative cover. This, in turn, ensured the availability of fodder for livestock, leading to better health and productivity of milch animals.

The Maloonga Check Dams Project proved to be a game-changer for the region, providing long-term solutions to water scarcity, improving hygiene and sanitation, and enhancing the overall quality of life. By ensuring year-round access to water, the initiative not only curbed rural migration but also empowered women and children by reducing the burden of water collection.

With its lasting impact on water security, agriculture, health, and rural livelihoods, this project reinforced a sustainable model of community development, ensuring a brighter and more resilient future for the people of Jodhpur.
